2 January 1881 — Naples
Sunday. 2nd January [1881]. Went to church in the morning with Hill. After luncheon Henry & I went to see some pictures by M Altamura in the house of a Prince Colinna next door to this hotel. There were a good many nice old things in the house & it was well & comfortably furnished. The P. was at home & received us & showed us over the house. From there we went to Css Montest Angelo’s, stopping first at Sigr Marini’s. I waited while Henry went in. He was much struck with what he saw. Css Montest Angelo received us. She is a fine looking old lady of the English type– Smooth clear complexion, white curls & a cap. A good many people were there calling & we had chocolate handed round. The Css is an English woman. She was first married to a Swiss & then to this Italian of whom she is the widow. We then went for a drive along the Pausilippo road. The weather was lovely & there were many people driving. We dined at the table d’hôte. Played dominoes in the eveng.
