3 January 1881 — Naples
Monday. 3rd January [1881]. Read & worked– Lunched at 1. Sir George Bowen came to call & said he was leaving today for Rome. He stayed chatting some time & talked a deal about a party at Lady Holland’s last night at wh he had been. He told us about the colonys of wh he had been governor & said they were most agreeable posts. After lunch Signor Errera came & took us to Sigr Jeruse’s studio just opposite– He is the author of the fine bust we admired so much at Pce Filangieri’s. He is quite a young man, good looking & a gentleman. We saw a bust of Mrs Somerville & several others—but nothing better than what we first saw. I came home & rested. Henry went to the Museum. I watched the “Duilio” come in to accompany the King & Queen to Sicily & then amused my self with watching to see him start & in watching Vesuvius wh was rather more active than usual, throwing out showers of sparks wh remained alight for a few seconds on the ground. We dined at Lady Holland’s & she attacked us for not having gone to her last night– Met besides the Bulows, Pce Castagneta, Pce Palfi, Ld & Lady Charlemont. Sat between the latter & Castagneta. A few men came in the eveng. We stayed till 10.30.
