4 January 1881 — Naples
Tuesday. 4th [January 1881]. Read & wrote. At 12 we went out. Early in the morng Castellani came to call having returned yesterday from Sorrento & promised to dine with us this eveng. We went & lunched at the Cafe d’Europe. On the way to lunch we went to Scognamiglios to ask about the prices of the reproductions of Pompeian bronzes for the Madrid Museum. After luncheon Giovanni came to fetch us with a carriage & we drove to Portici to see the ruins of Herculaneum. The theatre was very interesting but the small portion of the town wh has been excavated is not half so striking as Pompei. On our return we went up to the Villa Beatrice to see Mrs Montgomery whose “day” it was. There met Pss Cariati who asked us to go to her box at the S. Carlo tomorrow eveng. We were glad to accept as we had failed in an attempt to get stalls. We went to meet the Castellanis at the Cafe d’Europe & gave them a dinner there. Afterwards we went with them to their hotel (des Etrangers) & they gave us tea & we sat talking till 10.30. It was windy & threatened to rain. Henry was ill part of the night from the effects of lobster wh he eat at dinner.
