14 January 1881 — Naples
Friday. 14th January [1881]. I did not go out in the morng. Henry went out to the Casanuova Inst. & in the afternoon to the Academia de Bellas Artes. I stayed in till Mme de Bulow called for me & took me out driving we did a little shopping & left some cards. The weather was damp & it rained every now & then. After our drive she took me to Lady Holland’s to tea. Met there a pretty young woman Css Schiavoni’s daughter in law. Lady Holland was very nice & kind to me & sent me home in her carriage. We dined at the table d’hôte & Mr Franks dined also & came for coffee to our room. In the eveng we went to Lady Hollands. There were very few people– When we returned home we found that Vesuvius was very fine & for the first time we saw a lava stream. We were so much interested that we stayed at the window watching it till one o’clock.
