15 January 1881 — Naples
Saturday. 15th [January 1881]. We had to give up our intention of going to Salerno today on acct of the weather being so unsettled. Henry & I went off in the morning to the church of Sta Chiara to see the monuments & then to S. Giovannis & Carbonara where there are also magnificent tombs. In the afternoon Mme de Bulow called for me in the carriage & we went shopping. We bought boars teeth set in silver as a talisman against the evil eye & we were most amused at our difficulty in finding them & went abt asking for “dents”– The manservant Gabriel helped us in bargaining– I went to tea at Lady Holland’s & met Dss [illegible word] & her daughter & Pss Cariati– Lady Hd sent me home in her carriage. Dined at table d’hôte. In the eveng we had a visit from Mr G. Bunsen who remained talking politics a long time.
