19 January 1881 — Rome
Wednesday. 19th January [1881]. Wrote letters & did not go out in the morng as I got up rather late. Lunched at 1 & went to see the Castellanis. He was at home—Mme was out. We remained there some time looking at some of his beautiful old glass & were just leaving when Mme C. returned. We agreed to go out walking together tomorrow at 2. We went to leave some cards & then went to the Pinchio; got out & walked on the walls. Met Mr Morgan who was driving. He got out & spoke to us. He is staying at the Bristol. We went back to the Hotel & then I walked with Giovanni for escort to Lady Bagot’s. She has an appartment at 44 Crociferi & is comfortably settled. We had tea & a long gossip abt many things. I walked back to the Hotel. Just before lunch we had a visit from our American friend Mr Field who is a very amusing & jovial man– He invited us to luncheon on Friday. We dined at 7 after the table d’hôte. I had rather a headache from last night’s dissipation & went to bed at 9. There was a great storm of wind, rain & thunder in the night.
