20 January 1881 — Rome | |
Thursday. 20th January [1881]. Got a letter from Lady Holland in the morng. Wrote letters all the morng to Lady H., May Boyd & Mr Nicolson abt selling our horse & James & Jerry’s return to England. Henry went out in the morng for an hour. Lunched at 1. At 2 drove out to the Lateran Museum—but as it shut at 3 we had only ¾ hour there. We only saw the Roman antiquities. From there we went to call on Mr & Mrs Warrington Wood– Went into Mr Woods studios & saw all he was doing. He offered to teach me modelling & we arranged I shd go tomorrow morng. Amelia Wood lent me some books & gave me some flowers. A hailstorm came on while we were there. They have the Villa Campana where the old Campana collection was. They told us they only gave £3000 for it. It has a charming garden & a cottage wh was originally a chapel & still has some Giottesque frescos. There are only 5 living rooms in the house & they only keep 2 servants a man cook & a maid servant. We left some cards & as it rained & hailed we returned to our hotel. Had visits from Senator Cerruti & his niece Marchesa & also Ct Conestabile the older brother. Dined at 7 after table d’hôte. Henry went to Mr Trollopes in the eveng. Yesterday Henry had a letter from Mr A. Otway saying he heard from Sir C. Dilke that the Govt was going to raise Washington to an Embassy & offer it to Henry– H. wrote & told him he did not think he shd accept it. | |
