22 January 1881 — Rome
Saturday. 22nd January [1881]. I went off in a cab at 9.30 to Mr W. Wood’s studio & worked at modelling for 2 hours—& then returned to Henry. At 1. we lunched. It was bitterly cold & sleeting. After lunch we walked out to leave some cards in the Piazza de Spagna & to Corrodi’s studio & then took a carriage & went to Hotel Costanzi to call on a Miss Frances Goldschmidt who brought Henry a letter from Sir Moses Montefiore. She is an elderly lady & we were happy eno’ to find her at home. We then went into the Church of Sta Maria Maggiore but found that owing to the late hour & dark weather we cd see nothing. As we came out some one followed us calling scusi—scusi & we found it was [illegible word] the London picture restorer. We thence went to leave a card on Mrs Walpole & then home. As we came out of lunch we found Signor Fiorelli waiting to see us & he came up & sat a long time smoking & talking. He offered us all facilities for seeing the latest excavations in Rome—& was most kind. He has a fine head & is a vigorous old man. Was much pleased with Signor Corrodi’s studios– He has an immense quantity of pictures half finished & has a great many of them framed in black frames à l’Espagnole. He has charming views of the East Jerusalem & Cairo & the Mosque of Omar—& Cyprus—& puts a vast deal of light into his atmosphere—& paints very well. He seems to be a great favorite with the Pss of Wales. At 5 had a visit from the Roumelian Minister who had known Henry at Consple in 55. Received parcel of tortoiseshell things from Mme de Bulow & Turkish Embroidery from Mrs A. Hanson– We went to dine at Lady Eyre’s 22 Pa di Spagna. Met Sir G. & Lady Bowen, Mrs Ritchie, Bishop (RC) Clifford, Mr & Mrs Story, Sir Vincent Eyre took me to dinner & Mr Story sat on my left. In the eveng there was a party & a lot of English & Americans came. At 11 we went home. It was very cold & poured all night.
