23 January 1881 — Rome
Sunday. 23rd January [1881]. Hill & I went to Trinity Church in Campo S. Silvestro. A small church—singing bad—very full– Lunched at 1. At 2 went out in a cab to the Spanish Academy being the opening day on King Alfonsos fête. It is some way off. There were a good many people there we knew. There are only 4 studios & Casado de Alisato’s, Varra                & they contained clever but rather startling pictures. Casado had painted an enormous canvass of “               il Monje” in wh there are a doz men’s heads rolling on the floor having just been cut off. Ct Coello was very civil & took me abt & then left me in charge of a nephew of Cardl Simeoni’s– We went to call on the Sermonetas but they were out—& then went to Css Conestabile with the same ill luck—at 4.30 returned home. Adl. Cerruti called & also Ct & Css Francisco Conestabile & they sat with us some time. We went to dine with the Story’s at Palazzo Barbarini. Met Ld & Ly Bagot, Mr Bruce, Mr & Mrs Dana (US), Mme Peruzzi (Storys daughter), Duc de Ripalda, Mr Morgan, 2 Story sons. Ld Bagot took me in & I sat on Story’s left. Amusing dinner on the whole, In the eveng there was a party & a few people came. A stout gentleman played the piano & Mme Peruzzi sang—& then we took up our departure being thoro’ly chilled by the inclemency of the weather.
