24 January 1881 — Rome
Monday. 24th January 1881. I went off in the morng to Villa Campana & worked there a couple of hours on the modelling & returned to the hotel by lunch time– Dressed & went off with Henry to the Castellani’s house & found there Mr & Mrs Field, Mr Morgan & another lady & gentleman (US) who all went with us to see the Torlonia collection. We drove the Castellanis in our carriage. We found the Torlonia gallery bitterly cold but full of fine statuary of all sorts—principally found on his own vast estates. We were too large a party to enjoy it. Mrs Field was most enthusiastic continually thrust herself between me & the statue in contemplation saying “Oh my! ain’t it perfectly exquisite!” Mr Field said every thing was “lovely,” & then proceeded to make humorous remarks. There was no stove or brasero & no carpets & ones feet were soon as cold as the marble statues. Saw a splendid collection of portrait busts of all the Roman Emperors—but there was so much to see that we promised ourselves to return another day to study it. We took the Castellani’s to a house she wanted to go to & then Henry & I went to call on Mme Cairoli whose day of reception it is. It was a solemn affair—a great many ladies sat in a circle & we were glad to get away after having done the civil. We decided to remain on in Rome for the rest of the Carnival. I wrote to Paris for a new gown & to Mama for my jewels. We did not dine out– I made cigarettes after dinner.
