26 January 1881 — Rome
Wednesday. 26th January 1881. Henry went with me to Villa Campana to give Mr Wood a sitting for his portrait wh he wishes to alter. We came back at 12—dressed & went to lunch with Mr & Mrs Field (US) in the Via Gregoriana & met Mr & Mrs Dana, Mr Morgan & Mrs Story. Mr Dana is a very clever American who is travelling to collect materials for a book on International Law & a very pleasant person. We had a pleasant lunch & had mush & hominy (fried polenta & white Indian corn)– At 3 we went to the Castellani’s. I paid Mme a short visit & then we took Castellani to the Royal Mews to see our tapestry wh is in the hands of Gentile for repair. He approved of it & advised us to have it done. We took Casti home & then went & paid some visits & found Css Maria Conestabile at home it being her “day.” There were a few others calling & it was a solemn affair as it is not the fashion to introduce any one to each other. Home by 5. Dined at the Pantaleonis. Met Mme Keffenbrink & had a visit from Miss Goldsmid & Mme Keffenbrink asking us to dine with her on Saty we said we cd not so she said it shd be Friday if Mme Minghetti cd dine also that day as she wanted to introduce me to her. We met besides at dinner M. & Mme Werstemberg (the Dutch Minister & his wife), Ct & Css Pasolini—he has just published his father’s letters—& a Senatore Filippo who took me in to dinner & Mrs Bruce. I had Signor Minghetti on my left. During dinner he & Signor Filippo had an animated discussion across me as to whether divorce shd be allowed in Italy. Minghetti being for it. In the eveng there was a ball & a good many people came. We left at 11.
