27 January 1881 — Rome | |
Thursday. 27th January [1881]. Henry went with me to Villa Campana & he sat to Mr Wood while I modelled & we came back to the Hotel to lunch. Afterwards we went out together to leave some cards & called at the Embassy. We found Lady Paget in & she received us on the bottom of the great staircase & very soon her carriage was announced so we took the hint & did not stay long. She complained of the quantities of English who come here with letters of recommendation. She said she used to have a “day” but she found the small English fry flocked to it in order to scrape acquaintance with her smart English friends & so she had given it up. Altogether she was not complimentary to the English. We came in at 5. Mme Cairoli called & offered us her box at the Apollo to hear Faust wh we accepted. Then came Dr Smith the Canon—& then Mme Castellani so that we had reds, Blacks & Govt all together! At 7 we dined at the Costanzi Hotel with Miss Goldsmid & Miss Grey up in their little sitting room & had an excellent dinner but it was not very lively tho’ they were most kind. At 9.30 we went off to the opera & stayed for a couple of Acts. There was a very stout prima donna who was not an ideal Margarita & we were not tempted to stay late. | |
