28 January 1881 — Rome
Friday. 28th [January 1881]. I went off to the studio as usual at 9.30 & returned to lunch. Went to call on Mr & Mrs Marsh the American Minister here. They live in the Palazzo Rospigliosi near the Quirinal & have a splendid apartment high up. Mrs Marsh seems a very nice person. Her husband is a good deal older than she is & is slightly paralytic. I gave her a message from Mama abt Turkish Embroideries wh she had promised thro’ a friend to try & sell. From here we went to Mrs Storys & had another toil up– It being her “day” we met a good many people there but we did not stay long as we found we cd not talk to our hostess she was so much engaged & I was glad to go home & rest. Mrs Bagot called & also Miss Hatty Hosmer the American sculptress a funny little body with hair cropped short badly dressed & very plain but with a merry voice & bright eyes & what I call rather a knobby face. She & Henry had been old friends & she came especially to see him & promised to return. She has given up her Art in the search of a machine for “perpetual motion” & spiritualism. It appears that she spends all her time & fortune over this & has shut up her studio wh is a great pity. We went to dine with Baroness von Keffenbrink in the house called Claude Lorraine’s house– She has a charming appartment there. The Minghettis dined there & I had thus an opportunity of making her acquaintance. She is rather good looking still with very pleasant cordial manners & was very nice to me– Ct & Css Pasolini also dined & the Pantaleonis. In the eveng Mme Minghetti told me she heard that the Pagets were very jealous of our being here & then Pantaleoni told me he knew it was true & he cd prove it by a correspondence he had had. Baron Keffenbrink is a tall good looking middle aged man & paints large pictures of animals—some of wh hung up in black frames in the dining room. A few people came in the eveng amongst them M. & Mme Brunet, he is military attaché to French Embassy. Began today to model.
