29 January 1881 — Rome | |
Saturday. 29th January [1881]. Henry & I went off to Mr Wood’s studio together & he sat to Mr Wood while I modelled and it was still damp weather but only rained at intervals. When we set off home we thought we shd find a cab directly but we had to walk as far as Trajan’s Forum before we got one. We had to lunch hurriedly & then I went off to call on Lady Bagot whose throat is better tho’ she is still in her dressing room. Henry called for me & we went to leave some cards & to see the Church of Sta Maria di Ara Coeli where there are some very interesting tombs & where is the stage on wh at Christmas children are made to repeat pious speeches as described by Anderson in his novel the Improvisatore. Then we went to the Pantheon which is always a beautiful & interesting thing to go & see again & one of the most striking things of great Rome. Went home & rested– Later had a visit from the Marquis d’Azeglio– Dined at the Hotel Bristol with Sir G. & Ly Bowen. Met Mr & Mrs Trollope, & he sat on my right. Met also Capt. & Mrs Rich naval attaché to the Embassy. Sir Vincent & Lady Eyre &c. In the eveng there was a “tail”—& then a Miss Bowen sat down to the piano & laboured thro a piece of music—a Mr Sandeman whispered a song—Mrs Allen Campbell & Lady Bowen shouted a duet & we were so bewildered with such painful sounds that we were glad when 10 o’cl came & we cd retire. | |
