24 February 1881 — Rome
Thursday. 24th February [1881]. I went off to the Villa Campana very early as I promised to let my model go off to prepare for the Carnival at 11 & I sat to Mr Wood for my own bust. Giovanni came up to fetch me. We lunched with the Bülows who arrived last night from Naples we were rather late & being Carnival there was somewhat of a confusion so we had to wait for our lunch. At last we got it & then Henry & I went out to Mr Saumarez balcony where we met a good many people. The Queen was in the Teano balcony opposite us & nodded across to me. Today there were two processions. One of the Italian artists the “Return from Mecca” wh was very well done. The other was a triumphal car by the French Academicians. They were all in a Medici dress—in white & grouped so as to represent a biscuit group. When they came to the Teano balcony they threw the Queen a magnificent white bouquet at wh she appeared delighted. From there after the 1st gun for clearing the course I went with Lady Agnes Douglas in her carriage to Mme Westenbergs to see the Barberi & have tea. There were a good many people there. I returned home in Mrs Bruce’s carriage. We went to dine with the Castellanis and only met there Prof. Barnabei. Signor Mario (the gt Republican) went there after dinner. I was so tired in the eveng we walked home early & went to bed.
