27 February 1881 — Rome
Sunday. 27th [February 1881]. I had such a cold that I did not go to church. Wrote & read &c. After lunch I went to see Mme Cairoli by appointment but the servant said she was going out so I returned home. Henry took out Mme de Bülow to see the Corso in the Via Nazionale & when they returned they said it had been very uninteresting. They went to Mr Shakespear Wood’s house. Dined at 8 & directly after went out with Henry to Mme Alfieri’s—she was gone out to see the illuminations on the Via Nazionale wh were very primitive merely consisting of arches of light carried over the road & a large star at the end. We then went to Mrs Story’s. We found a few people—Ct & Css Conestabile, Mrs Bagot, Lady E. Romilly & Ouida. We did not stay very long & there was no music.
