1 April 1881 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 1st April [1881]. Alice came to luncheon with us. I drove with Henry in the afternoon. We left cards & went to see Fred’s new house in St John’s Wood. Met there Fanny Layard & went to the door to see old Mrs Layard of Uffington who is 89 & too infirm to get out of the carriage—she looked pretty & bright & knew us all but asked questions twice over & seemed to forget the answers. Went again to the dentist abt my gums. Home at 5. Visits from Ly Rawlinson, Sir Wm Drake & Ella, Lady Eastlake, Mr Ashburnham, Blanche & Ethel. When they were gone I got a note from May Ponsonby saying Connie had meant to come but suffered too much from her fall. I knew of nothing so I dressed early for dinner & we went to see Blanche to ask what it meant. It seems Connie fell out of the carriage at Windsor on her return from the funeral of Pss Frederica’s baby & had sprained her thumb. Dined with Mama & met Lord & Lady Sligo, Ld & Ly Wentworth, Ld & Ly Tenterden & Mr Franks. I had not seen Isabel de Peyronnet since she became Lady Sligo. She has grown stout & matronly—& was amusing as of yore.
