7 April 1881 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 7th April [1881]. I went off in a cab to the dentist at 10 & had my front tooth stopped, then walked to see Susan Hambro & sat on her bed & talked to her for abt ½ hour. Went on to Blanche’s. I met her at the door just going out with Ethel & walked with them to Hanover Sqr, left them there & walked on home. Henry went out to lunch with F. de Rothschild & I lunched alone. Drove out after & met Henry at the V. & Murano glass shop in St James’ St we left cards. Enquired for Dizzy who seems to be rather worse– Went to see Mrs Drummond & Mrs Kay whose “day” it is & from there went home– Mrs Burr, Mr Clark & Blanche & Ethel came to tea. Mr Blogg came in to see abt mending a bracelet of mine & I took in a diamond brooch wh he showed me to the drawing room. Mr Clark followed me out & at once bought it giving a cheque for £90 on the spot! Blanche took leave of me as she starts tomorrow with Edward for Biarritz on a visit to Ivor & Cornelia. Henry & I dined with Dr & Mrs Wm Smith at Westborne Terrace. Met Sir Hy Thompson, Ld Houghton, Ld & Ly Bury, Mr & Mrs J. Murray, Dean Stanley, Mrs J. Stanley, the Squire & Mrs Burr. The Dean took me down to dinner & was very agreeable as usual & I had Dr Smith on my right. The Dean & I talked over Madrid & he asked for all our servants whom he remembered when he stayed with us. In the evening the 2 Miss Smiths amused me by their talk about poor, hospitals, as wh is the fashionable occupation now– Says one “Do you approve of the Kyrle Society?” On expressing my ignorance on the subject she explained that it was a society whose object it was “to teach the poor the beautiful!” I began to joke abt it but I soon found they meant it only too seriously. Had a talk with Sir Hy Thompson after & he told me from what he hears there is not much hope of Ld Beaconsfield’s recovery. He spoke contemptuously of Dr Kidd whom he said was a homeopath but who says he is indifferent as to whether he follows homeo—or allo—pathy. He said that before Dr Quain wd meet Dr Kidd in consultation Dr Quain required Dr Kidd to express his sentiments on paper wh he did & declared he had been treating Ld B. allopathically all through.
