9 April 1881 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 9th April [1881]. Herbert our servant was taken ill with fever last night. Monty asked Dr Cottle to see him. He advised his going to the hospital for fear of its being small pox wh is a great deal about, so we had to send the poor man there. Arthur came & lunched with us. Nety & Capt. Montagu came to see us before lunch—also Connie & her boy. We left King’s X by the 3.50 train to go to stay at Knebworth arrived there at 5.30– Had some tea and rested. Mrs Plowden & a Capt. Brabazon arrived after us & at dinner that was our party with a Mr Macguire (Ld L’s private secy). Mrs Plowden is wife of the Consul Genl. at Baghdad—rather pretty & very much got up & decolletée. Evidently Ld Lytton admired her & during the evening several times whispered to her– Ghost stories were told most of the eveng but as we did not dine till 8.30 the eveng was not long. The house is a Tudor house—a small portion being old the rest rebuilt by the late Lord. Lady Lytton who is very pretty & very sweet took me into her room when we went to bed & showed me that the room had been the late Lord’s mothers room & that her son had written an inscription on the wall begging that the things belonging to his mother in her room should never be removed—so that Ld Lytton has had to build rooms for him & Lady Lytton that she may arrange it as she wishes.
