10 April 1881 — Knebworth House, nr. Stevenage, Hertfordshire
Sunday. 10th April [1881]. Went to church in the morning with Lady Lytton & the children– The weather was much milder & the E. winds ceased. Henry & I walked up & down the garden till lunch. Afterwards I went upstairs & read & wrote all the afternoon while the others were out walking. Went down & had tea at 5 & then sat & read in the long gallery. Dined at 8. Lord Lytton began to smoke at dessert & took a good deal of wine & then ended by seizing Mrs Plowden’s hand & keeping it. Henry told a good many interesting stories– He said that he had turned over some old papers & found the original draught for the first instructions that had been given to Sir Harry Parkes when he first went to Japan & wh Henry had himself drawn up. He said that at that time it was not known for certain who was the ruler of Japan & what was the real Govt. Mrs Plowden was very elaborately got up in picturesque attire. Henry told me that when they were all out walking in the afternoon, Ld Lytton had walked some time with his arm round Mrs P.’s waist. Henry & Major Brabazon following.
