11 April 1881 — Knebworth House, nr. Stevenage, Hertfordshire
Monday. 11th April [1881]. Walked in the garden with Lady Lytton. It was quite warm out & rain threatened. At abt ¼ to 12 we drove to the station with Mrs Plowden & her children & Capt. Brabazon & went up to town. Got home to Savile Row by lunch at 2. Found Arthur & Monty at home. After lunch I drove Henry to the F.O. & then went to enquire for Ld Beaconsfield who appears by the bulletin to be sinking. I went on to see Blanche’s children that I might write to Blanche at Biarritz abt them—found them all 3 in & very flourishing. Went to see Mama & found her at the door just going out. Went home at 5. Susan Hambro came to see me—sat with me some time. Young Aleck Ross called also. We had a little dinner party consisting of Lady A. & Capt. Montagu, Mr & Mrs Higford Burr, Sir Wm & Miss Drake, Mr Fergusson, Sir Henry Cole & Monty. Pleasant eveng & Nety Montagu sang.
