14 April 1881 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 14th April [1881]. Maria came up to see me. Monty & I had a great housekeeping talk & he also decided not to go to Turin but to take a run to fish at Aboyne & he was to start this evening. Maria did not stay luncheon wh we had at one o’cl. Lord Cowley came to pay Henry a visit. He said he knew this house well as it had belonged to his uncle Ld Mornington. He told us he heard it is considered certain Henry is to go to Rome & if Sir A. Paget refuses to go to St Petersburg he is to be put on his pension. We started for Templecombe by 3.20 train from Waterloo. It was very full but Arthur had ordered us a carriage to ourselves. I was headachy & slept all the way there. We got to Templecombe at 5 & drove in abt 20 min: to Henstridge. Found Merthyr, Theo & Lady Westminster all very well. There was a young Major Mansell staying there also. They played whist in the eveng.
