19 June 1881 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 19th June [1881]. I got up early & started at 9.30 for the Abbey service. I found a cab in Piccadilly which looked a desert & drove to Westr Abbey arriving there just as the Lord Mayor & Corporation drove up in their gala coaches with swords & mace—the Lady Mayoress & party– I drove in to the Cloisters & went in through the Deanery thereby getting a seat in the Choir. When the organ began the voluntary the clergymen & choristers & the Lord Mayor in procession came up—sword mace & all– The procession went up to within the Altar rails where seats were provided—the Ladies had places in the Choir. There was usual cathedral service & then a sermon by Canon Barry for Hospitals it being “hospital Sunday.” The Lord Mayor tho’ a Nonconformist had come in state to the Abbey. I got a cab & drove home. Henry went to Pembroke Lodge to see Lady Russell by train after lunch. I had agreed with Kate to drive her to Roehampton & was starting in a brougham to fetch her when she drove up & said she could not go. I took her to Eaton Place going to see Lady Gregory en route. Found her down in her drawing room & several people calling. I went from there to Connie’s at 8 Onslow Gardens & Charley said he would go down to Roehampton with me & we drove down together getting there about 4.30. Maria was still away at Ipswich where she remains till after her nephew Richard Du Cane’s funeral, but we found Richard, Alice, Temmy & Miss Oliver, Arthur Guest, Mildred & all the little Du Cane girls. Carry Somes also joined & Henry also came on to see the party & we had tea on the lawn. We dressed for dinner & went to dine at Dover House with Mr Julius Morgan the rich American partner of the late Mr Peabody. We met his daughter & son in law Mr & Mrs Burns & a widow Mrs Mason. We had a very pleasant evening & a good dinner & drove back to Savile Row abt 11 oclock.
