14 July 1881 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Thursday. 14th [July 1881]. Henry was called at 7 to go fishing & came back to breakfast in a great state of mind– He had hooked a very large fish—played it for ½ hour & then lost it. I spent the morng sketching the house but before setting to work the Genl. & I walked down to the Bank where Monty was fishing– As we started the Genl. ran back for the gaff wh was most lucky for as we got to the river we found Monty had a fish on & was by himself & without a gaff. So the Genl. gaffed the fish which turned out to be abt 15 lbs. Later Henry went down to the river bank but had not even a rise– After dinner Henry went up to Bjornes & the Genl. fished below. I painted a while at the stones in my monster fish picture & then walked down to the bank to see Monty fish. He hooked one at once but owing to talking to me he lost it & did not have another chance. He then gave me a lesson in casting but his rod was so heavy it was not easy for me– Then we went across to try & look at the trout stream but it was so swollen we could not get near it—so we deposited our rods at home & walked up the road to see the others fish. We walked a good way up the road to Frieswold and saw Henry & waited to see him land. He had caught a splendid salmon 23 lbs the second largest that has been caught. The Genl. only brought home a grilse of 5 lbs. Supper & one game of cribbage with the Genl. before bed time.
