29 July 1881 — Molde | |
Friday. 29th July [1881]. when we got up to be ready in case the Tasso came to fetch us. Monty had an interview with his lawyer Mr Randers sitting on the door bench to transact business. We breakfasted & then every one began to doze & try & while away the time till dinner. Monty fell asleep in the dining room sitting on the sofa & some good French people who were breakfasting were kind eno to speak in a whisper not to disturb him—then he woke up & he & Henry & I went for a walk up the hill a little way & round by the waterfall & through the town to the hotel. We found dinner ready & a sort of table d’hôte. Had our coffee & I made a little sketch of the view from the hotel. Suddenly the Tasso was said to be in sight & Monty called for the bill. There was a most absurd scene with our landlord who was very excited with drink. He had charged 20 £ “for his trouble” wh Monty naturally struck out at wh Siemonsen burst out “I will nothing have, I wish you a good journey but I will nothing have– I sit up with all my people all the night but I will nothing have! &c At last Monty could wait no longer paid him the full bill & we went on board the Tasso. We found we all had our cabins as we had on the passage out & Hill a place in the lady’s cabin. We found our talkative acquaintance the lady & her brother whom we had left at Veblungsnes on board to greet us—also Mr & Mrs Wingfield & a boy. Sir J. Waldron & son & a Mr & Mrs Batten who had made the journey out with us. We soon set off for Aalesund & got there abt 5. They took in a cargo of cod fish packed in separate wooden boxes with ice. This took abt 1½ hour. We dined as soon as we started on & as we had kept in the Fjords ever since we left Molde we were in smooth water & went to bed in comfort. Henry & I played cribbage before bed time. | |
