28 July 1881 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Thursday. 28th July [1881]. Packed & arranged & then Henry, the Genl. & I went & fished but got nothing. We dined at 4. The weather became cold & rainy. We sent all our luggage down to the shore to be ready to be sent on board the steamer & sat & read & waited. It was too wet to fish any more & we were all sorry to leave. We said good bye to all the natives & went down to the boat as soon as the steamer came in sight. We had to go over the wet fields & 2 brooks & as I had not on very thick boots Monty kindly carried me over the streams & as soon as I got on board I gave my shoes to be dried at the engine. Our last view of our valley was shrouded in sheets of rain & we had to sit below in the cabin. At 10 (we started abt 9) we lighted my tea machine & had a cold supper with tea & whisky toddy & then settled ourselves to sleep till we got to Molde. The weather got worse every moment & the boat rolled so that one could hardly keep ones feet & some of the party felt sick. We made up our minds that it must be very bad outside & began seriously to think of going to Trondhjem & then overland. We landed at last at Molde abt 2 A.M. & went to Siemonsen’s hotel only to find it full & not more than one bed to be had wh was given to me. However I only laid down & Hill tried to sleep on 3 chairs. Monty laid down on the floor of the hall—Henry & the Genl. took chairs—& so we dosed away the time till 8 o’clock
