27 July 1881 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Wednesday. 27th July [1881]. We breakfasted rather earlier than usual & abt 10.30 I & the Genl. drove off in our respective carrioles to the Lake to fish. It was rather a showery morng. I took Thorwald with me to carry my rod & the Genl. took Anton Syltebö. Just as we got to the Lake a very heavy shower came on & we were obliged to take shelter & to put on our waterproofs. The Genl. went off in one of the boats wh Monty had had sent up to fish down the river with Anton to row him. After waiting a little while & the rain not ceasing we thought we would go on & Thorwald rowed me a little while in the lake while I trailed for trout. I caught 2 tiny ones not worth the having we then went into the 2 first pools of the river & I cast while Thorwald rowed me but I caught nothing. I touched 2 or 3 but could not manage to get any. The weather chased & about 2 we landed & I eat my bit of cake wh I had for lunch & Thorwald eat his provisions. We then began fishing again & I finally caught one small trout—& then gave it up in despair and landed, harnessed the poney & drove home rather disgusted with my small bag after such hard work. I found the Genl. had not had any better luck or Henry either. Monty had remained at home & done a lot of packing & arranging. We dined at 5 & then I took my rod & went down with Henry to the Bank to have another try. Henry & John went out in a boat & I fished on shore & soon got a good 5 lbs trout & John came quickly over the river to land it for me. I got another soon after but he got away. The Genl. appeared a little higher up in a boat with a fish on his line & he killed it on the bank opposite a 26 lbs. Then Monty who was fishing at Syltebö’s Rest called for John & the gaff & caught an 8 lbs trout. We went in to supper in better humour.
