26 July 1881 — Syltebo, Romsdalsfjord
Tuesday. 26th July [1881]. Henry went out fishing at 8 but caught 0. This is the first blank day we have had for 3 weeks– No one having caught a salmon. They told me the trout were rising so directly after breakfast I went down to the Bank with my rod but fished all the morng vainly altho’ the trout were rising all around & over & round my line. I went home & got another fly but with no better success. At last I went back & got Monty who had been engaged all the morng with his contracts. He came down & fished & we met Henry coming in who said he had just seen a large fish jump opposite the Bank. But Monty could not rise him. We sent for the trout rod & tried to get them in that way & the Genl. joined & tried to catch them– In vain– It being 4 oclock we returned to dinner. It settled into such a wet evening that Henry did not go fishing again– The Genl. went & Monty was to have gone but the weather was too bad—so he & I set about arranging & packing away several things– Hill got the stores put away– I packed the writing materials & medicines & Monty the fishing tackle & tools. Then I & Henry played cribbage till supper. The Genl. came in disheartened & very cold– Monty sent in from the pool for a fly & when he came in said he had had a rise but could catch nothing—so we went to bed disgusted with the bad luck.
