24 September 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 24th [September 1881]. Was down at ¼ to 8 to give the Bruce party breakfast & to send them off by the 9.15 train to Padua where they intend spending 2 or 3 hours before going on to Bassuno to stay with the Balls. They went off very happy having enjoyed their stay at Venice immensely. Did not do much in the morng being very tired & sat & sewed. Mrs Burr having bought the old lace of the Buranella who returned this morng to complete the bargain I set to work to make up a cap for her with it. Henry went off to Murano with Sigr G. Estellani & the expert Sigr Rolandi from Palermo who came to see about the English Co undertaking a factory of common glass & bottles. Henry returned by luncheon time. After lunch he took me, Morelli & Mrs Burr to Css Pisani’s house to look at the pictures—especially the portrait of the doganessa wh is a very interesting one but Morelli pronounces it not to be Titian. The Vss has some very pretty little Bonifazios but nothing else remarkable. We went from there to the Manfrin gallery to see a picture wh was for sale but Henry was recommended by Morelli not to take it & we went on to the Labia Palace to see the Tiepolo Hall wh is really wonderfully handsome but falling into great decay tho’ the fresco are still in good order– The floor of the room is giving way, that is to say felt very shaky. This splendid palace is now let out in rooms to the poorest lodgers. In a handsome dining room leading out of the hall we found mosaic being made. On the wall, let into nice wood carving are still Labia family portraits wh seemed to look reproachfully on the scene of desolation. We went home & had some tea—the Squire being well eno’ to join us in the studio. Mrs Eden came to see him & sat some time talking. Mme Castellani of Rome also called & came up to the studio so we had quite a little party. Our stores arrived from England this afternoon. We dined at 7 & the Squire came down. I played cribbage with the Squire but was so tired I had to go to bed very early.
