25 September 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 25th September [1881]. I had to put my room in order after all the confusion of the past week & that took me all the morng. After luncheon Css Olga Mocenigo came to call. At 4 we took Morelli to the railway station and he went to Padua. After taking leave of him we went to pay Rawdon Brown a visit as Mrs Burr was specially anxious to call on him. We found Mme Hurtado & Mrs Perry there & poor old Brown in rather a bad humour. He came the other day to our door with Baron Koller to leave cards. I was on the balcony & made signs to him to come up wh Brown did not apparently understand. When I asked him today why he did not come up he said “after the reception he had had” &c and he & I had a little tussle! Signor Alessandro Castellani & his wife & Prince Teano dined with us. The Prince was leaving Venice this evening & came to dine en route for the station. After dinner he played the piano & he & Castellani sang together. The latter sang a Republican air wh he said had been sung under the walls of Rome by him & his companions during the last seige. He sang as one inspired & the music was very fine. Then he & the Prince sang together thro’ a great part of the Barbieri doing between them all the different parts. The Prince left us to catch the train abt 10.30 for Milan & the Castellanis returned to their hotel.
