13 November 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 13th November [1881]. Did not feel at all well so I gave up church & remained at home. Connie went to hear a service at S. Trovaso with Idita & Charlie took the children to church. We lunched at 1 and then Henry took Connie & Co to see over the Ducal Palace & I promised to be ready when they came for me. I went to talk to Giov. abt household matters & asked him to do something for me, at wh he refused me point blank—astounded & furious I turned from him & had a great cry. Hill came, administered salvolatile & tea & I calmed down & was decent to behold when the 2 girls came & carried me off to the Piazza in the gondola– There the band was playing & the rest of our party was walking up & down with the Lowthers– We also met the Usedoms & also Ld Bagot. We dropped Connie & Charlie at the Edens door & came home. Countess Olga Mocenigo came to tea & brought her little girl Valentine with her. She was rather shy but went upstairs with the girls under the protection of her nurse. When they were gone went up & pasted despatches till dinner. Connie played Beethoven all the evening. While walking in Piazza we met Cortelazzo who has arrived to stay with us that I may finish his bust.
