24 November 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 24th November [1881]. I found my right knee very weak yesterday while walking & on the Piazzetta I once nearly fell—so I determined to lie in bed & rest it. I did not get up but set to work to copy a hat which the maids had vainly tried to do. It was honeycombed in silk & was not easy. I got up at 3 & went downstairs to the gondola & took a row. Henry & Charlie walked to the Stabilimento to meet Mme Usedom. I left Connie at the Piazza & fetched Henry from the Stabilimento. He left me at home & went on to see Mr Brown. Prince Metternich, Mme Hurtado, Idita & Mme Olga Mocenigo came to 5 T. & the prince played his walses with Connie. We begged Css Olga to stay & dine. She promised to return but said she must go to see her child fed. Connie carried me up 2 flights of stairs on her back like a sack of coal. She is tremendously strong. Mr Malcolm dined with us & we had some chamois he had sent us from the Cadore. Henry & Connie played cribbage in the eveng talk & work.
