23 November 1881 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 23rd November [1881]. I modelled and put the last touches to Cortelazzo’s bust– I felt that it was useless to go on at it any longer & that I should never be satisfied with it & might spoil it. Mrs Eden came & took out Charlie & Connie for a walk. Lunch at 1 & then Henry, Charlie, Connie & Evely went off to the Murano glass works to meet Ct & Css Usedom– Bee & I worked at concocting a song for their play till P. & Pss Metternich came with the 3 children to see this house. I showed them all the pictures & took them all over the house up & down stairs. The offered to take me & Bee out with them. P. Metternich & the boy & the baby girl went across the Traghetto first & then sent the gondola back for me & the Pss, Bee & the Pss eldest girl. We walked from the Traghetto to the Piazza where we met the P. again. Bee & the little girl fed the pigeons & we walked in the Piazzetta. Met Mme Hurtado & Idita & walked with them. The Princess brought me & Bee home in her gondola. Mme Canevaro & Mrs Eden & Mme Pilat came to tea & Mme Canevaro & I sang Rubinstein duetts together Mme Pilat playing accompaniments. Then the girls sang comic songs to Mme Canevaro. Stuck despatches till dinner time. Cribbage in eveng.
