10 December 1881 — Paris
Saturday. 10th December [1881]. Breakfast in bed. At 11 went off with Henry in cab to Palmaroli’s studio. Found him at work & a model had just finished sitting to him. It was curious to see how calmly she retired to a corner of the room—took off her costume & proceeded to dress herself entirely. It did not seem to us that Palmaroli was improved in painting. He is spoilt by the American trade, but his colouring is always fine. He made me a present of an enormous palette wh is a new invention & rests on ones arm & against ones chest which takes off the weight. We stayed talking a long time with him about Madrid abt pictures—& he was full of the English school wh he had never known about before a visit he paid to London last year. We got home abt 1 & had lunch. Before we finished Nubar Pasha came to call but Henry told him we were at lunch & promised to go & see him at the Hotel de Rheims. I remained at home reading & writing till 4. Henry went out directly after lunch. Hill & I walked to the Rue Halevy for me to try on my bonnet. It was drizzling & cold & very muddy & this morning it had snowed a little. Dined at 6.30 & then went to the Nouveautés Theatre to see “Le Jour et la Nuit” a very pretty Operetta by LeCoque– The music & scenery both very pretty– There is a lovely prayer en trio in the old style & a duett for women wh I especially liked. We walked home. It was fine but muddy.
