9 December 1881 — Paris
Friday. 9th December [1881]. Was tired & breakfasted in bed. At 11 I & Connie went in a cab to DuCroquet’s where she ordered a dress & was fitted. From there we went to the Bon Marche & did some shopping & did not get back to the Hotel till 1 when Henry & I lunched. Connie said she would not lunch but she was tired & I made her come to have some wine & bread at our table. After lunch Henry & I drove out together. We went to call on the Mendez Leals & found them at home & very glad to see us again. She has got stouter & he blinder. We stayed talking a long time. Went on to Mr Waddington but he had just gone out. Went to bonnet shop but of course my bonnet was not ready to try on. Went to DuCroquet’s & tried on for the last time. When we got home by abt 4.30. Had a visit from Dss of Fernan Nunez, Spanish Ambassadress here. She was always very nice & kind to us at Madrid. Palmaroli came to see us & we had a long chat abt Madrid & old times. He is not a bit altered & says he is getting on very well and paints a great deal for America. We dined at this hotel at 6.30 & Connie & Charlie with us—& then went to the Bouffes to see “La Maschotte”—a sort of Operetta—which was certainly amusing but very indecent– Took leave of the Eliots who leave for London tomorrow morning.
