27 January 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Friday. 27th January [1882]. I sent to beg Mr Burton to come & tell us about Connie—he came & said she was going on well & that Evely had the scarletina favorably. Kitty went out to see Arthur. Mrs Burr came to see me, having just returned from Rome. She came to say she cd not dine with us tonight. Maria came up & we were a large party at luncheon. Mrs Burr went away at 3. Maria returned to her home, Kate & I drove to St Paul’s to call on Canon Liddon & Mrs Ambrose who live at Amen Corner. They were out so we went into St Paul’s & walked round it. We went on to the Masters House at the Temple to call on Mrs Vaughan & found her at home. She was very kind & cordial & kept us a long time. She told us all abt poor Dean Stanley’s illness & death. How she never knew he was ill till she went to dine there on the Wedy previous to his death. Towards the end of dinner the servant touched her on the shoulder & said the dean wd like to see her. When she beheld him she felt that the hand of death was on him & a kind of chill came over her. He did not keep her long & soon said he had had eno’ talking—& the next time she went to him she kept her eyes closed as she did not wish to look at him in the horrible distorted swelled state he was in. She said he suffered physically less than any other person wh have done as he was curiously insensible to all pain. Mrs Vaughan was very pleased to think that the Dean’s old coachman (who had before been Lord Beaconsfield’s coachman) had been pensioned by the Queen. Miss Baillie had spoken to John Brown abt him & he at once mentioned it to H.M. & she had telegraphed for him & his wife to go to Osborne– The Q. at once gave them the care of the Swiss House at £1.1 a week to him & 10/ for the wife– The little Museum to be kept in order—& tea to make for the Royal family if they wished—this their only work. We went home to tea at 5. Kitty went on in the carriage with her Monty to see the Aldersons– Mrs Poynter came to tea & Mrs H. Hanson. We thought Mrs P. looking too depressed & ill. Susan & Nety Hambro came & dined with us. Henry & Susan played cribbage & after he & I played together.
