1 February 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 1st February [1882]. Had a tow row with the men servants as to cleaning of windows &c I wrote a little & the morng slipped away somehow. Henry went to the city. I lunched at home alone. Henry returned by 3 & we drove out together—left some cards & went by 4 to Sir Henry & Lady Thompson to an afternoon party– Lots of ladies were there & only one man besides Henry– Heard 2 young ladies, pupils of Lady Thompson’s play piano—they are quite young & hope to earn their living by teaching the piano. Came home at 5. Mrs Oldham & Mrs Hanson came to tea. Afterwards I cut out chair covers & then dressed & went to dine with Mr & Mrs Ball– Met Huxleys, Miss North, the Arthur Russells, Mr L. Burton, & Mr Milman. I sat between Milman & Ball– Food very bad– Dinner pleasant. After dinner we got hold of 2 books of Mr Haywards verses to pretty women—great trash & some very improper—especially some he wrote in French– We went into fits over the old gooses rhymes to the lovely women of the day.
