31 January 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 31st January [1882]. Monty & I had a field day in the drawing room carrying down books & emptying a book case to fill with pretty things wh Monty bought of Giovanni. It took us all the morning till luncheon—& we rearranged the furniture a good deal. Maria came while we were at luncheon– I left her with Monty finishing the arrangements of the room & went out driving with Henry. We went to leave some cards—called on Mrs Burr & found her at home—& then went on to S. Kensington to leave some cards—& so home by 4.40. Mrs Burr came to tea with us—& sat chatting a long time. Monty brought a lot of Doulton’s flower pots to put about the drawing room– He went out to dinner & we went to dine with Mr & Mrs Hartpole Lecky. Met Mr Huxley & Miss H., Ld & Ly Arthur Russell, Col. Shelley, Mr & Mrs Ritchie (she née Thackeray), Mrs & Miss Petre– Huxley took me to dinner & I sat between him & our host– Huxley was most agreeable & interesting & I had a very pleasant evening & our subjects were varied. He talked of Rome & the three days he had spent there, about Venice which he has not seen—about Roman Catholicism & his dislike of Manning whom he called “a windbag” & how he believed that the Papal Power was happily daily diminishing in the world & in abt half a century it wd be reduced to the same state as Paganism was in the days when Christianity became the religion of the Emperors– He spoke of music & said that he was so fond of it he always went to the R.C. churches when abroad to hear the musical masses–
