30 January 1882 — Milton Court, nr. Dorking, Surrey
Monday. 30th [January 1882]. Sent Hill & luggage by 11.15 train. Mr Sitwell was to have gone at the same time. Cart & waggonette ordered for them—by some mistake Hill was sent alone in the carriage—in which Alice Rate & I were going out. We had to wait until it returned & then we went with Henry to the Rookery to see Mrs Fuller. The grounds were lovely, the house very cosy inside & they have some fine watercolours by Prout, Cox &c. We were shown some prints a ruined lady wants to sell & heard abt her jewels wh are in pawn– We returned to Milton for luncheon at 2. Henry walked to Dorking station with the girls & Mr Rate. She drove me there in the carriage. We left Henry with the bags at the station & rushed to a nursery garden & I got 2 plants—a cyclamen—& a hyacinth to take with me & we had just time to rush back & catch the train. We arrived in town at 5. At a station on the line we saw Mr & Mrs Hugh MacDonell & called across to them to their surprise. She promised to come & see me in town– Monty was still in town when we got home & came in abt 6. Mama also called having come from seeing Constance– She says Evely has been moved to Langham Hse with scarletina & is going on well– As soon as we had arrived at 5 we had a visit from Miss Lewin to tell me Lady Eastlake was in bed with cold—& was sorry not to be able to come & see me. Henry & I dined alone—& played cribbage afterwards.
