5 February 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 5th February [1882]. We breakfasted at 9 & then Henry & I walked off to church. We took a hansom in Regent St & drove to the Temple & went to the Master’s House to Mrs Vaughan whom we found dressed for church & she took us into the Temple Ch. by a side door & gave me a seat by her side. Henry was put to sit in the nave. The choral service was a good one. The Anthem was “The heavens are telling.” Dr Vaughan (the Dean of Llandaff) preached on the text of the labourers hired at different hours of the day & all paid alike—but I thought his arguments rather confused & his sermon altogether weak. After the service Henry & I walked to Leicester Sqr where we took a hansom & went to 15 Queen Anne St to lunch with Blanche. Monty also lunched there. Afterwards Henry went to call on Mrs Jeune. Blanche & I walked to meet him on his return & then He & I went to call on the Drummonds & Blanche went to church. We found Mrs Drummond, Miss D & Mrs Kay at home & sat talking a little while. On the way out we met Mr Fergusson who was paying a visit. On our return home we had a visit from Mr & Mrs Barrington Kennett & then came Mrs Hambro & Nety & Mr West, & Mr Stewart of Pau & Mr Poynter; gave them tea & had a cheerful meeting. Monty invited Henry & me to go to dine at the Bachelor’s Club to meet Mr & Mrs Hambro & Blanche & Edward. We had a good dinner & sat & talked a little while down stairs & then retired to our respective homes.
