6 February 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 6th February 1882. I had my hair washed & as I had to dry it before the fire I was late down this morning. Henry’s and my bust done by Mr Warrington Wood arrived from Rome & I walked out to see if I could find pedestals to set them up on. I walked as far as Jay’s in search of Gaffin’s & on returning found I had gone the wrong way & that it was near Fields’. I found 2d hand scagliola pedestals for £2.2. One pedestal was brought after luncheon & my bust was raised on to it & looked very well. Henry & I drove out at 3. We went to Downy’s & I returned the painted photo of Kate wh they had sent me & wh was not well done. On to 8 Onslow Gardens where Henry got out & I went on to leave some cards & to enquire after Sir Wm Drake. I found Ella at the door & she said Sir Wm was better of the eczema but was down with a bilious attack. I returned to Connie’s to fetch Henry & found him & her playing cribbage. We went home by 5 o’cl T. & no one called. We went to dine with Mrs Burr & met Melony & Aimee Scobell, Mr Pearson & Mr Greenwood, Arthur Burr & the Squire, very gouty were at home– We went to the Gladstones’ party in the eveng & met a good many people. Blanche & Edward were there. I made up my mind to talk to Gladstone & was going towards him when Musurus P. got hold of him & carried him apart for a talk. However when he returned I caught him & had 5 minutes chat & he seemed to become aware who I was & was very civil. I told him we were to have met his daughter at dinner on Saty & he said he had gone to the theatre with his son & had hardly been able to find his way across the park & his daughter had been obliged to stay at home on acct of the fog.
