8 February 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 8th February [1882]. I lent the carriage to Connie in the morng to take her 2nd drive since her illness. She came to the door & I went down & sat with her in the carriage a few minutes. I did not go out but rested my knee. Ivor & Cornelia came & paid us a visit & we showed them over the house– They came up from Canford for the opening of Parliament. Arthur came to dinner & then he & I played cribbage. At 10.30 Henry & I went off to a party at Lady Granvilles which was very pleasant & where we met a lot of people we knew. I sat & talked to Labanoff the Russian Ambr & Ld Granville came up & said to me “Before you go I want you to look at a pair of vases on the chimney piece & tell me whether you think they are really Chelsea. We bought them at a little shop in Dover”– After a while Labanoff & I went & looked at them & found them marked with gold anchors. They were urns of a dark blue colour & at first sight rather like Sevres but on examination & finding the gold anchor we thought they must be Chelsea so before I left I went up to Ld Granville & said I congratulated him on his acquisition– He turned & called Lady Granville to hear what I said & she seemed pleased & answered—We were uncertain as we found the gold anchor can be scratched off with the nail– I thereupon retired somewhat crestfallen. Met Mr & Mrs MacDonell & she took me aside to tell me a story she had had from Rome of the behaviour of a Mme Duquet a Belgian Secretary’s wife. When she was at Court the Queen noticed that Mme D. had not the proper length of train on & begged one of her ladies to tell her of it. Mme Duquet went straight out to the refreshment room asked for a knife—cut her train off & sent it to the lady in waiting that she might give it to the Queen to have it measured!
