20 February 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 20th February [1882]. Got up latish. Worked sewing machine. After lunch drove out—tried to find Mme Sanchez Ocaña to leave some money for Emilia Riaño– Left other cards & the same direction & then went to Pimlico to leave others. Bought flowers & fruit for tonight’s dinner & then home. Mrs Reeve & Blanche came to tea & afterwards Mr Ffrench. Mrs R. said there was a rumour that Russia was going to war as the Emperor wanted to employ his troops—& he would probably begin in the Balkans against Austria—that Mr Goschen had ascertained that the Germans wd side with Russia & there was much anxiety. Mr Ffrench stayed on till just before dinner. Mr & Mrs Ball, Mr & Mrs Rate, Mrs W. Hanson—Mr Alfred Burton (the Dr) & Mr Fergusson dined with us. Monty did not turn up—the debate on the new rules for the House begins today & there is probably something exciting going on– The Rate Girls came to fetch their mother & go to a dance– All went away early–
