2 March 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 2nd March [1882]. Sir Arthur Otway came to see Henry & they sent off their double barrel post letters. Maria came up to luncheon with us. Mr Rassam also lunched here. I took Maria out driving. We went to see Susan Hambro. Maria left me there & went on to see mama—& brought Susan some Turkish work to buy. A tremendous hailstorm came on & so I drove Maria to Waterloo Station & went home myself. Mama came to see me & sat some time talking. Just as I was going up to dress Giovanni rushed in to say the Queen had been shot at on her way from London to Windsor. We went to dine at Dr Wm Smith 94 Westborne Terrace & carried the news with us. No one had been hurt & the man who fired the pistol at Windsor station seems to be a lunatic. It however caused great excitement. We met Ld & Ly A. Russell, Sir Richard Maine, Mr & Mrs Jeune, Sir Hy & Miss Kate Thompson at dinner. Sir Rd Maine took me to dinner & I sat by Mr Jeune. Dr Wm Smith took Mrs Jeune down to dinner “as a bride” much to her confusion, it being her second marriage. Pleasant eveng. Sir Rd being a very pleasant man—we talked much of the East.
