19 March 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 19th March [1882]. I went to Hanover Church in Regent St in the morning—found the E. end hung with almost black cloth in token of Lent, a large choir, a small congregation & the galleries, of wh there was a double set quite empty. There was something cold abt the whole thing. I went home to lunch. Afterwards Henry & I arranged some books &c in his room. At 3 we drove to Poynter’s studio in the brougham. We found him at work on his cartoons for the mosaics of St Pauls which promises to be a very fine thing. We went to see Mrs Poynter who was in & then on to Lady Lindsay of Balcarres afternoon reception at the Grosvenor Gallery. There we met lots of acquaintance. I made the acquaintance of Burne Jones & his wife (Mrs Poynter’s sister). There were several esthetically dressed ladies. Morris the poet & upholster’s wife & daughter were very remarkable but the palm of eccentricity was carried off by a Mrs Stephens whose husband is the Art critic of the Atheneum– She wore a large grey felt hat which stuck on the back of her head like a halo looked most peculiar—a little square indian shawl worn cross ways—of a greeny hue—& a brown silk skirt short all round having an old fashioned border woven into it round the hem. Lady Reay & I walked round her to examine her well—& were much amused. Princess Louise came just at the last—but I did not see her to speak to. We walked home after 6. Arthur came & dined with us & we played cribbage–
