30 April 1882 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 30th April [1882]. Woke all right & no symptoms of the pin inside me. Alice & I walked to St George’s church. Met Mama, Mr Schreiber & Mr & Mrs Clark coming out & they all except Mrs C. walked home with us. A tremendous shower came on of hail & rain while they were with us. Alice went to lunch at Langham House with Mama– Henry & I drove in our brougham to Mrs Gerard Leigh’s to lunch with her. Met there Mrs Fraser & her little girl, Miss MacDonald & Mrs Langhan. After lunch Henry & I drove off to go & see Constance. As we passed thro’ the park we met Connie & Charlie driving to see us—so we stopped & spoke to them & then went off to see Mrs Drummond & found her at home. I was allowed to go up & see Mrs Kay who was in bed having gone thro’ a terrible operation. She looked very white but was very cheerful. She has been ill 7 weeks & this is the 4th operation she has gone thro’. We went across the Park to Chesham Place– We found many large trees blown down by yesterday’s gale. Lady Tavistock was not at home so we went on to Lady Hammond she was at home & we paid her a long visit & then went down & sat with Lord Hammond & we had a very lively discussion abt Henry’s position & Lord Hammond got very excited & scolded him—but advised him to get some friend to ask a question in Parliament about him so as to keep him before the public. From here I went to see Lady Stanhope & found her at home & a Mr Pitt Taylor calling & another gentleman. The latter told of us the melancholy death of the new Dss of Albany’s sister after her confinement. Henry went to call on the Duff Gordons and we both met at home afterwards where Alice was waiting for us. Mr & Mrs Hambro dined with us & also Monty.
