7 May 1882 — Aldermaston Court, Aldermaston, Berkshire
Sunday. 7th May [1882]. Breakfast 9.30. I got up soon after 7 & wrote before dressing. It was a splendid morning. Went to church at 11 and stayed to the Communion. Sat talking in Mrs Burr’s boudoir till luncheon. After lunch wrote letters and then went & sat on the lawn with Henry & watched Arthur Burr & A. Ross play tennis. Mr Waring went away in the afternoon. Henry & I took a walk in the grove which was perfectly lovely. Picked hawthorne flowers. I picked a lovely white flower under the trees wh I discovered soon by its smell to be garlic! We sat a long time with Mrs Burr toasting in the sun wh was very hot outside the house door on the terrace. Abt 5 it turned chilly & we went in. Henry & I both went up to my room & sat reading till dinner time. I was much interested in the Autobiography of Mark Rutherford a dissenting minister & nearly read it thro’. Dined at ¼ to 8. In the eveng Mr Ross played the violin, Miss Scobell sang & Miss Isabel Scobell accompanied. I played some accompaniment for him– Mr Ross also sang but in this he does not excel & he wd do well to stick to his violin wh he plays very well. He makes all kinds of contortions & grimaces on both occasions—especially while singing. The Squire sent us early to bed so Henry & I played cribbage in our rooms before we got into bed–
