6 May 1882 — Aldermaston Court, Aldermaston, Berkshire
Saturday. 6th May [1882]. Breakfast at 9.30. Afterwards Lady Lindsay, the Squire & I walked down to the kitchen garden & at the iron gates Mrs Burr met us with the pony carriage & we got in to it & took a drive round the park & back thro’ the middle of it to show it all to Lady Lindsay. It was a beautiful day & the sun was quite hot. We came in to lunch at 1.20– At 2 Lady L left to return to London. Mrs Burr and I went in the little wooden cart with Tommy the pony I driving. Mrs Higford walked by our sides to open the gates. We went up to the Farm & inspected the chickens & the farmers wife recounted to us all her troubles with the young broods & their deaths by foxes, jays and “the gaps.” On leaving the farm we drove back to the house round by the road. Got home by 5. Had T & played cribbage with Squire. Miss Annie Scobell & her fiancé Mr Waring & Mr Aleck Ross came to stay here. The new clergyman & Mrs Douglas his wife dined– Arthur Burr taught me picquet. There was also a whist table & Besique table. Bed at 11.
