5 May 1882 — 3 Savile Row | |
Thursday. 5th May [1882]. Alice came to see me. I wrote & packed my travelling bag. Lady Emily Hankey & Mrs Nugent came to see me. Lady Emily was very kind & I was delighted to see her again. She had always been so kind to me before I married when Evy Stanhope & I were such great friends. I used to stay with them at their cottage at Sandgate and Evy & I used to walk in their little hatched garden after dark. We talked over our life & our little love affairs– She told me how she had refused Lord Mahon & how she regretted it & pointed out names of stars wh she knew. Then when we went to bed I used to climb up to her little cabin like room & sat talking again while she combed her long hair wh hung on the ground as she sat on a chair. Afterwards she married Lord Mahon & I married Henry abt a month after she married & we have only met at intervals since. Blanche came to fetch me & took me to Heaths to get a hat changed for they had sent me one I did not like. I found Maria at home on my return & she stayed to lunch. Monty was also there & he left directly after for Bere. Maria & I had a long talk over Clark’s rudeness to her the other night at Langham Hse when she asked if he cd not put one of her sons in Dowlais works to learn business. What she resents is not his refusing it but his speaking disparagingly of our father as a man “of no education” wh is not true. I persuaded her to pass it over & to say nothing as it wd make the family furious. Mr Schreiber called for Alice & took her back to Lang. Hse for lunch—so we 2 Maria & Monty lunched at 1.30 together & at 3 Henry & I went off to Gt Western station & there meeting Lady Lindsay of Balcarres we went to Aldermaston. The bus met us & we arrived just at tea time. Lady Lindsay played the piano to us a long time & after sitting by her some time I played cribbage with the Squire till dressing time. Mr W. Philips dined & Mr Higford was at home. I played cribbage again with the Squire. | |
