9 May 1882 — Aldermaston Court, Aldermaston, Berkshire
Tuesday. 9th May [1882]. Got up at 7.30. Wrote &c before breakfast. Worked machine for Hill– Went & sat in the billiard room & painted, doing up a little sketch of Jerry wh I had given Mrs Burr & wh wanted touching up. After, we looked anxiously for the papers for further news of the Irish murders. There was not much beside the inquests wh proved that 5 people were implicated & that they had driven away in a red car– The general consternation seems great. The Times is loud against the Govt. After lunch Mrs Burr, Henry & I drove to Silchester to see if any further excavations had been made. We found 2 deaf old men slowly digging out the foundations of a Roman house. They said what had last been dug out had been filled in again & a silver spoon had been found & the D. of Wellington had got it. Got home at 5. Found Mr & Miss Burns waiting to see us to return our visit. Had tea. Sat talking a long time to Mrs Burr in her room while she painted. Went up & did the machine. Dined at 7.30. Played cribbage with the Squire till bed time. Henry & I had a private game of cribbage up in our room after we were undressed.
